Camino del Inca is an international project made up by the countries of Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia and puts itself forward as a candidate for being zoned “Cultural Heritage of Mankind ” by UNESCO. The Andean Main Route or “Qhapaq-Ñan”, is a complex road system with an extension of more than five thousand kilometers and includes a set of tracks, footpaths and routes that connected the different integrated regions of the Inca Empire in the past. In Argentina, it crosses seven provinces: Jujuy, Salta, Tucumán, Catamarca, La Rioja, Mendoza and San Juan. The NOA (Argentina Northwest) is the Argentine region with a greater influence of this civilization. In Catamarca, in the center of the province, towards the west of the city of San Fernando, we find the tracks of the Incas in the department of Belén that is next to Londres, the second older locality of the country. There, the Shincal de Quimivil is located, a monumental archaeological park inhabited by incas from 1470 to 1536 that keeps the urban layout of Cuzco. Tafí del Valle, the National Park The Menhires in the locality of the Mollar and the Ruins of Quilmes, a fortified citadel, located to only 10 km of Tafí del Valle, are examples of the Inca influence in Tucuman. A zone seeded with granite-like pieces carved by natives belonging to the Tafí culture. The origin of the word menhir is celta and means “long stone” (from “men”: stone and “hir”: long). Tafí del Valle is known as the Argentine Stonehenge. In Jujuy, we find diverse archaeological deposits in all the region of the Quebrada de Humahuaca: Coctaca, Uquía, Peñas Blancas and Chulín are some of them. The Pucará de Tilcara is the most imposing deposit. If we visited the Cuyana Region, these attractions are worthy of visiting. In La Rioja and following the National Route Nº 40 in Chilecito, we go past Pituil, San Blas, Londres, the second oldest locality of the country and head of the Belén Department. The Shincal de Quimivil is there: a monumental archaeological park constructed and inhabited by the Incas from 1470 to 1536, that keeps the urban layout of Cuzco. It encloses over a hundred premises grouped in monumental buildings. We continue by Route 40 arriving at the Ruins of Quilmes. This region sheltered an enormous indigenous population, Quilmes, and is considered the greatest pre-Hispanic settlement of Argentina. In San Juan we find San Guillermo Reserve and La Dehesa in Ullum, the Quebrada of Conconta and Tocota en Iglesia, the Calingasta foothills with the region of Tamberías and the Paso del Lámar in Jáchal. In Mendoza we must visit the Caracoles de Villavicencio towards the Cruz del Paramillo and the Uspallata Valley. We visit the Puente Natural del Inca (Natural Bridge of the Inca), the viewpoint of the Aconcagua (where mummies of Inca origin were found) and the frontier village with Chile: Las Cuevas. Coming back by Potrerillos, we can see traces of the Camino del Inca along the way. |
