It is known like “National Capital of Petroleum". It was the first Argentine place in which was found petroleum in the beginnings of the 20th century. Today is a booming city, the largest one of the south Patagonia.
This important city of Patagonia presents an assorted offering of lodging so much for the ones that are in transit as for the ones that desire to get installed and to carry out urban tours and adventure excursions.
As it is a big city there prevail discos, cinemas, theater and casino, shopping, cultural walks and different historic buildings. The important economic activity is materialized in the port that besides harbors seals and various species of birds.
A natural milestone of this city is Chenque Hill whose window offers a view pan of the city, the harbor sector and the maritime horizon. Its 212 meters of height are formed by sedimentary materials interspersed with banks of thousand-year-old oyster farms.
The museums show the architecture, the paleontological and economic past of Comodoro Rivadavia.
One of the tours you cannot miss in Comodoro Rivadavia is the circuit of the coastal zone visiting each one of its resort beaches which are ideal for nautical activities. Some of them are famous for their cliffs and the possibility of obtaining seafood to prepare delicious dishes. We find: Costanera beach, Km3Beach, Km4 Beach and Alí Shoal.
The religious, military, economic and paleontological past can be known in: Soberania Square, the Former - Plant of the Port – CEPTUR starting point of the Historic Railway and Port Circuit, the Patagonian Regional Museum Prof. Antonio Garcés, the National Museum Of Petroleum, the Military Historic Museum "Fortin Chacabuco" (Km 11), the Paleontological Museum Astra, the Cathedral San Juan Bosco, the Wind Farm – Energia Limpia (1994) and the Lighthouse San Jorge.

El asentamiento en Comodoro Rivadavia surge como una necesidad de puerto para comercializar mercaderías y materia prima producidas en Colonia Sarmiento, donde los galeses encontraron tierras propicias para la actividad agrícola.
La primera expedición que mapea la región fue la del comisario Antonio Oneto, en el año 1877 que siguiera el curso del Río Chico desde Gaiman y llega hasta los lagos Muster y Colhue Huapi. Allí comprobó que aquellas tierras eran aptas para la agricultura, aún cuando estuvieran alejadas de todo puerto. Durante la expedición de Fontana en 1885 se establecen agricultores galeses en la zona y solicitan la creación de un puerto en el Golfo San Jorge para sacar mercaderías.
Luego de haber recibido los informes de la expedición de los Rifleros del Chubut, elevados por Fontana a Buenos Aires; en el año 1890 llega frente al cerro Chenque en misión exploradora, la corbeta "La Argentina" al mando del Comodoro Martín Rivadavia nieto de Bernardino Rivadavia.
El 23 de Febrero de 1901 por decreto del Gobierno Nacional se dio a esta población el nombre de Comodoro Rivadavia, en homenaje al ilustre marino que efectuó los sondeos en el Golfo San Jorge.
La explotación petrolera, tuvo un inicio casual en el año 1907 provocó la creación de Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales en 1922.. En los finales de la década del 50, el Gobierno Nacional lanza "La Batalla del Petróleo" y fomenta la instalación de numerosas empresas extranjeras.
Además de una marcada descendencia galesa, Comodoro Rivadavia está constituida por colectividades de diversos países: una colonia "Boers", españoles, portugueses, italianos, polacos y chilenos. Esta ciudad también se pobló con habitantes de otras provincias de la Argentina.
