The origins of the city of Cruz del Eje, (population: 30.000) date from September 22nd, 1735, when Francisco de Baigorrí was granted a ranch with the same name. By 1886 this town underwent a new boost when the railways were lain and the railway workshops were settled. In 1890, Cruz del Eje was granted the hierarchy of Municipality and in 1936, it was zoned ¨City¨.
Cruz del Eje is settled on the region known as Cuenca del Sol due to its dry climate, with over 300 sunny days a year. In this city, situated next to National Route N° 38, the National Festival of the Olive Tree takes place every year. In the landscape dominated by olive groves we find Cruz del Eje Dam, over 3 km long and with a surface of 1,200 hectares. In addition, in this city you can visit the house where Dr. Arturo H. Illia (prestigious President) lived and the Railway Museum which encloses numerous locomotives and wagons which made the history of the Railroad in Argentina. This city offers a wide range of hotels, camp grounds and restaurants.

Los orígenes de la ciudad de Cruz del Eje se remontan a la estancia homónima que fuera una merced otorgada a don Francisco de Baigorrí el 22 de septiembre de 1735. Hacia 1886 la población de Cruz del Eje cobró un nuevo impulso gracias al tendido de las vías férreas y al posterior establecimiento de los talleres ferroviarios. En 1890 se le otorgó a Cruz del Eje jerarquía de municipio, y en 1936 se la elevó a la categoría de ciudad.
Por 1944 se inauguró el Dique Cruz del Eje, más tarde, en 1947, el Hospital Aurelio Crespo y el nuevo Correo. Impulsando el crecimiento de la ciudad, se construyó el nuevo Banco de la Provincia de Cordoba, en 1953. Finalmente, en la década del ’70, se cerraron los talleres ferroviarios.
