The city of Esquel is situated at the West of the Province of Chubut, very close to the Patagonian Andes. ¨Esquel¨ means ¨place full of burrs¨ or ¨quaking bog¨.This region is cut through by Esquel Stream. Two main attractions draw tourists to the place: Los Alerces National Park and ¨La Hoya¨ resort.
Every year, since 1980 the Provincial Theater Festival and the famous National Ski Festival are celebrated here, and a new National Ski Queen is crowned during the ¨Magical Night¨ in which skiers come down with lit torches
Regarding to extreme sports, the ¨Tetrathlon¨ has been recently included. This competition draws sportsmen coming from different places of this country.
Cultural tourism takes place in Esquel. The Araucanian Ngillatun Festival is celebrated at Boquete de Nahuel Pan, 14 km from the city. In the city you can visit the Museo Austral de Primitivos Modernos (naive) (Southern Modern Primitive Artists Museum) and the Museo Indigenista y Paleontológico (Indigenous and Paleontological Museum). The neighboring ranches develop rural tourism.
At Los Alerces National Park there is an outstanding activity in all its levels: trekking with excursions ranging from 2 hours to more than a day. This park is also a destination for sport fishermen and for those who like climbing, sailing, rafting, mountain bike and rides. |

Se considera su fundación el día 25 de febrero de 1906, fecha que marca la instalación del telégrafo. Sin embargo, ya había aquí pobladores, en su mayoría galeses. Distintas corrientes migratorias como la española, italiana, árabe y alemana aportaron su trabajo y hoy constituyen la base de la sociedad esquelense.
La llegada en 1945 de "La Trochita" que la unió a Ingeniero Jacobacci (Río Negro), aceleró su impulso al permitir el traslado de las lanas de la región hacia otros mercados. Hoy Esquel contiene un presente y un futuro orientado también a la actividad turística dadas las innumerable bellezas naturales de la zona, entre ellas, el Parque Nacional Los Alerces.
