In Old Spanish Language its name means ¨Beautiful¨. This province is in the northeast region of the Argentine Republic. Its capital city is situated at a bend of Paraguay River where historically, a Jesuit Reservation was settled. Its touristic exploitation has began recently.
Lovers of adventure sports and natural life will find in Formosa a region that meet their needs. Travels on 4x4 vehicles, photographic safaris, nautical adventures, cultural tourism coexisting with original towns, fishing and much more.
The events schedule of the province includes megaevents such as the Maigre Festival, the American Native Towns Meeting, and the Grapefruit Festival.
In the city of Formosa, the dense vegetation and the river are the main attractions. The Guaycolec Natural Reserve, Isla de Oro (Gold Island) and the Ing. Lucas A. Tortorelli Botanic Gardens are also worth visiting. In Summer, visitors can swim and do sport fishing at the resort and in the banks of Paraguay River.
From Formosa City, we can visit the city of Herradura towards the south, only 44 km away. This is a tourist villa par excellence, that can accommodate tourists in campgrounds and ranches and combines rural tourism with sport fishing (dorados, pacúes and meagres)
In the northwest of the province we find Pilcomayo River National Park, 180 km from the city of Formosa. There, you will be able to see the most exotic fauna varieties: Jaguar, Aguará Guazú or Otter, Anteater, Peccary, Melero Bears, Monkeys and Caymans.
Towards the West, there is an extensive region: the Bañado La Estrella, enclosed in Las Lomitas, 300 km from Formosa. Traveling on 4x4 vehicles, fishing and going for a photographic safari are some of the options. |

Diversas tribus poblaban la zona de las llanuras del Chaco y el Litoral antes de la llegada de los españoles. Una de ellas era los arawak-chané que llegaron desde el Caribe a través de la vertiente oriental de Los Andes. Otra tribu eran los chiriguanos que se llamaban a sí mismos jaguareté-avá (“gente-jaguar”) y eran de origen guaraní. Cultivaban maíz, porotos, mandioca dulce y zapallo y desarrollaron la alfarería.
Los wichis, también llamados matacos por los españoles eran pescadores, cazadores y recolectores. Desarrollaron la cestería y tejidos. Finalmente, los tobas autodenominados kom, al igual que los mocovíes y los pilagás eran cazadores recolectores. Usaban flechas y boleadoras además de la maza de madera.
Debe su nombre a un pronunciado recodo del río Paraguay llamado Vuelta Fermosa o Vuelta Hermosa. Aquí los jesuitas establecieron una reducción en 1673, llamada San Carlos del Rosario que fue abandonada tras la expulsión de los misioneros.
En 1875 Jorge Luis Fontana fue nombrado secretario de la gobernación del Chaco. En los siguientes 10 años se dedicó a explorar la región . Fundó la ciudad actual 1879 tras un viaje de 104 días en el cual también abrió el camino de resistencia a salta. Dos años después, el primer censo dio 443 habitantes de los cuales 213 eran austríacos y 176 italianos.
