Gral. Alvear City is the access to Mendoza Province for those who come from the south and east from the country to the south of Mendoza. It outstands for presenting one of the most important festivals of the Province: ' Fiesta Nacional de la Ganadería de las Zonas Áridas - Public holiday of the Stockbreeding of Dry Zones - at the end of April, or the first days of May.
The stockbreeding and the agriculture are the most prominent economic activities of the department of General Alvear. Nevertheless, at present is glimpsed like a tourist destination developing adventure tourism activities as trekking, boating, mountain bike, camping and rural tourism in farms and ranchos.
Picardo´s Mines is one of the attractions of General Alvear that is only 60 kilometers from the city. Picardo´s Mines comprises a mining complex of intense activity between 1900 and 1940. There are numerous exploited deposits of leads and silver that caused settlements. Nevado Hill (3,810 meters above the sea level), milestone of the south region of Mendoza, is sentry of the landscape and setting of adventure activities.
Another attraction is Pozo Azul that is located in Punta del Agua district belonging to San Rafael department; however it has a better access from General Alvear. Pozo Azul is a spring of mineral water that flows among the rocks and feeds daydream a vegetation of around it.
