In guaraní language, its name means: Big Tiger´s River. This is the city of joy and carnival. It lies on the banks of Gualeguaychú River in the Southeast of Entre Ríos Province. It is enclosed in a region close to Uruguay River, with a dense vegetation and ideal for water sports, thermal baths, fishing and easy life. br>
San José Cathedral and other buildings show the architectural style of the city. Gualeguaychú is known under two nicknames: ¨National Capital of Carnival¨ and ¨City of the Poets¨, the latter due to Olegario V. Andrade, Pablo Díaz, Pedro B Palacios, Mateo Dumón Quesada, Pablo J. Daneri, Dora Buschiazzo de Hoffman, Juan Antonio Machado and Luis Jeannot Sueyro.
In January and February the ¨Carnival of the Country¨ takes place. Every group works in the development of the dances and the construction of the floats all year round. It is the third most important carnival in the world, after Brazil´s and Venecia´s.
The green lands enclosing low hills and the extensive banks of Gualeguaychú and Uruguay Rivers, which converge in Puerto Boca, make a paradise of this place. Water sports, fishing and other sports such as those done at Parque Unzué, Club Hípico (Equestrian Club),Velódromo (Cycle Track), Kartódromo (Karting Track), Carpinchos Club, Pista de la Salud (Health Track) and Centro Recreativo (Recreational Center).
Regarding entertainment and relax, you may visit the complex ¨Gualeguaychú Thermal Waters¨ and the Thematic Casino Hall which shows the carnival history.

Esta ciudad fue planeada según la legislación española y ordenada por el Virrey Vértiz. El 18 de Octubre de 1783, frente a lo que hoy se conoce como Isla Libertad, sobre el Río Gualeguaychú. el Capitán de Dragones de Almanza, Don Tomás de Rocamora, nacido en Nueva Granada, Nicaragua, fundó la Villa San José de Gualeguaychú.
Por decreto el 4 de Noviembre de 1851, firmado por el General Justo José de Urquiza, la Villa de San José de Gualeguaychú es elevada a la categoría de ciudad. Por esa fecha, se proclamaba la inmigración en la región y colonias judías, rusas, escocesas y y suizas se instalaron en ambos márgenes del río Uruguay.
