This region is located eastwards Jujuy Province on the banks of Grande River. You can reach it by land or by plane, as Horacio Guzmán International Airport (located in San Salvador de Jujuy) is only 126 km away. It is worldwide known for the impressive Quebrada de Humahuaca (Humahuaca´s Ravine) which has been zoned Humanity´s Heritage by UNESCO, and for its eigh-day-long northern carnival.
All the region of the Argentine Northwest was one of the wealthiest regions in América during the period of conquest and colonization. It began to fall into decline when the Viceroyalty of La Plata River and the subsequent relocation of the economic power from Alto Perú to Buenos Aires.
The streets of Humahuaca are narrow and paved, with lanterns and adobe houses. The best way to go through Humahuaca is walking, breathing the northern air, watching the people. Several local groups entertain visitors while they enjoy the typical dishes of the region. In the city, there are many interesting places to visit; among them, the Independence Monument and the Regional Archeaological Museum.
The colorful beauty of the ravin, crossed by Grande River explains the settlement of primitive peoples whose mark can be seen in the different archaeological deposits of the region: Coctaca, Uquía, Peñas Blancas and Chulín.
Outdoors activities must be done quietly and regulating breathing as the height causes a decrease of the oxygen and that may produce dizziness and headaches to those who are not used to the place.

Toma su nombre de una tribu de aborígenes, los omaguacas, y lo da a su vez al valle que la rodea. Fue fundada en 1594 por Juan Ochoa Zárate, el cacique Limpita y algunos misioneros. Hasta fines del siglo XIX fue uno de los más importantes centros comerciales coloniales del entonces Alto Perú.
La importancia del pueblo de Humahuaca fue creciendo a lo largo de todo el siglo XVII, por su lugar estratégico, por obra de sus encomenderos, corregidores y cura párrocos. Era considerado en todo el Tucumán, el más grande pueblo y el de mayor vida económica, un centro obligado de descanso y reabastecimiento y asiento de los Gobernadores de la Puna.
Fue teatro, bastión, hito estratégico, campo de las hazañas más bravas e imperecederas de la Guerra Gaucha. En el suelo de Humahuaca , según el Archivo Capitular de Jujuy y otros documentos, se libraron 14 combates entre patriotas y realistas en el período que media de 1814 a 1821. Entonces Humahuaca ocupa una página interesante en la Historia Argentina. Héroe legendario y autor de la famosa batalla de Humahuaca fue el Coronel D. Manuel Eduardo Arias, que fue un guerrero heroico y decisivo en las luchas de la emancipación y dio a la patria en Humahuaca el galardón del 12 de Marzo. |
