The city of Puerto Iguazú is one of the most visited in the world but not for being a great metropolis. It is located northwest Argentina and is the main entrance to Iguazú National Park, one of Humanity´s Heritages. It is bounded by Brazil and Paraguay, by the confluence of Parana and Paraguay Rivers. Only 17 km from downtown we find Iguazú International Airport but you can also reach this city by land.
The fact of being a subtropical plateau-like rainforest characterizes the region. From Posadas, the visitor must travel 300 km to reach the city while from Brazil and Paraguay, he must cross Tancredo Neves International Bridge. From Puerto Iguazú, shopping excursions are made to Ciudad del Este (Paraguay) to purchase handicrafts and electronic devices. There are also trips to Brazil to watch the Falls from a new approach.
The Iguazú National Park is the main reason to visit the place. It is a geological fault resulting from a volcanic eruption. From the Argentine side, you can walk along a path built over the waters to watch the Garganta del Diablo. (Devil´s Throat) Safe and modern footbridges go along the falls making up three circuits: Lower, Higher and Garganta. The Ecological Train goes through the rainforest to let tourists be in touch with Nature and reach the different paths.
Iguazú River flows about 1.320 km long towards its confluence with the Paraná, 23 km beyond the Falls. This phenomenon can be watched from a place known as ¨Hito de las Tres Fronteras¨ (Three Frontiers Landmark) in which converge the borders of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay. Its wide is not always the same. It ranges from 500 to 1.000 meters. In the National Park, it widens up to 1.500 meters and turns South and then to North, making a large ¨U¨ that has, in his estuary, the rough slope that gives origin to the Falls.
The most impressive fall is Garganta del Diablo, 80 meters high and is in the principal course of the river. According to the season, the water level increases or decreases, making up between 160 and 260 falls. The best seasons to visit the place are spring and autumn and you must always carry a raincoat to protect you from the water drops sprayed by the Falls while you admire the rainbows.
A few kilometers away, towards the South of Puerto Iguazú but in the Province of Misiones, you can find Wanda, a little town, world-renowed for its gems and Tupí-Cuá Falls.
