Visiting Iruya is to find a town lost in the mountain and that got standstill in pre-Colombian times. This place of "fierce straw" as indicates its name in Quechua, is located 43 kilometers from Humahuaca and 340 kilometers from the capital of Salta.
To arrive at this town of Salta is necessary to pass by Jujuy and to travel through the road that crosses Abra del Condor by Provincial Route #133. This last locality is 4000 meters above the sea level and to arrive at Iruya we have to descend at 1220 along 19 kilometers. The place is surrounded by the rivers Colanzulí and Milmahuasi.
As every town of colonial origin, dominate the houses of adobe built with stone and straw. The streets are narrow and paved. Its Church was founded in 1753, today it continues standing but with few original elements of its construction because it has been repaired several times in order to be conserved.
The tourism finds in Iruya a mystical place to be lodged, to return the time behind and to be gone in the hidden roads of the mountain that link amazing populated of shepherds, artisans with ancient techniques and musicians.
From Iruya there are three the most developed circuits: the Circuit of Caminos del Inca, the Circuit of Arrieros and the Circuit of Condors. Most of them have to be carried out accompanied by guides in 4X4vehicles, on horse and/or trekking.

Este pueblo fue fundado en para servir de asentamiento a las huestes del ejército español. Desde este lugar se podía vigilar las poblaciones precolombinas que se ubicaban en lo alto de las montañas.
Su iglesia se fundó al año siguiente, en 1753. Su a techo era de barro y paja hacia fuera, pero por dentro se encontraba recubierto de caña brava. El piso era de adobe de gran tamaño. Presentaba dos altares. Para su conservación fue refaccionada con materiales modernos, motivo por el cual no puede ser declarada patrimonio histórico provincial.
La inmigración europea durante la gran inmigración también influyó en Iruya. Además de diversos descendientes, podemos encontrar una construcción conocida como FEDERICO III, una casa típica construida en el año 1903.
