Situated in the region of Valles Templados in western Jujuy, San Salvador is the capital city. It can be reached by land and by air, as it has an International Airport. It is the ideal place to have a rest while you are travelling across the northwest region in your ascent to the Puna, visiting typical high plateau towns such as Tilcara, Humahuaca, Purmamarca or La Quiaca (the frontier).
It is a mixture of modern and colonial city, built among the hills. It is called ¨Little Silver Cup¨. There, you will find architectural jewels such as the Cathedral, the Presidencial Palace, the Old Town Hall, San Francisco Church and Santa Bárbara Chapel, the latter dated from 1777. Besides, you can visit several museums holding the work of local artists such as Lola Mora.
Very close to this city, you can find Termas de Reyes, Laguna Yala and Río Blanco town. Here, you find the Sanctuaries of the Virgin venerated since the 17th century, the Virgin of Rosario del Río Blanco and Paypaya, patron saint of the Province. This city draws many visitors for its options of adventure and cultural tourism.
From San Salvador towards the northwest, we can reach Calilegua National Park, the most extensive in the region. It is situated at the Southeast of Jujuy Province, in Ledesma Department, on the eastern slopes of Serranías de Calilegua. Inside this park, there is a sector of Las Yungas forest rain and several stream sources. It is wet and hot. The park has many paths for those who wish to be surrounded by virgin nature. There are excursions lasting several days to Quebrada de Humahuaca. |

La capital de la provincia de Jujuy fue fundada el 19 de abril de 1593, por Francisco de Argañaraz y Murguía en territorio de los jujuy o jujuyes parcialidad de la etnia omaguaca, después de numerosos intentos frustados de avance español, la fundación del fuerte y la ciudad española de San Salvador de Jujuy significó el cierre del cerco español en torno a los diaguitas del conjunto llamado "calchaquí".
Jujuy era la más estratégica para el avance español por la Quebrada de Humahuaca, era el cordón umbilical entre el Tucumán, el Plata y el Alo Perú. A fines del siglo XVII había más bibliotecas y hombres de letras en Jujuy que en Buenos Aires gracias a un desarrollo impulsado por los jesuitas y las encomiendas. Durante las Guerras de la liberación, Jujuy fue invadido media docena de veces y en 1812 acaeció el éxodo de los jujeños hasta Tucumán, donde los ciudadanos votaron a sus representantes a la Asamblea del Año XIII.
Durante la Guerra de la Independencia Argentina Jujuy fue uno de los principales baluartes encontrándose muchas veces en pleno frente de tal guerra. Se convirtió en capital de la provincia desde el momento en que Jujuy se separó de Salta, en 1834. Durante más de medio siglo, unitarios y federales complicaron la historia jujeña que asumió proporciones épicas con la fuga de las tropas de Lavalle hacia el norte.
