Generally, we think of Mar del Plata as sea and waves forgetting that it lies on the foothills of Tandilia, which penetrate into the sea. Fue el 3 de Noviembre de 1746 , que los misioneros jesuitas José Cardiel, Tomás Falkner, Matías Strobel, Gerónimo Rejón y Manuel Querini se asientan, enviados por la Corona española a la vera de la Laguna de las Cabrillas ( hoy de los Padres) y fundan la Misión de Ntra.Sra. del Pilar del Volcán ( de Vuulcan o sea abertura entre dos cerros) refiriéndose al cordón montañoso que desciende de Tandilia pasa por Balcarce, continúa en la Sierra de los Padres y se interna al mar en Cabo Corrientes.
Esta reducción de lo jesuitas agrupaba a diversas tribus indígenas que los padres denominaron en general “pampas”. Debido al constante ataque de las tribus no reducidas, la región fue abandonada en 1751. Pero del trabajo durante ese tiempo, quedaron documentados usos, costumbres y lenguas aborígenes que recopilaron luego el P.J.Labrador y Guillermo Furlong.
En el año 1826 se funda en la Laguna, la estancia Laguna de los Padres, allí se instala José Hernández el creador del referencial Martín Fierro. Allí permaneció por más de 10 años con su padre.
