Known as ¨the happy city¨, Mar del Plata is the leading seaside resort in the Argentine Republic and it is in Buenos Aires Province.
Although it was originally (19th century) a fishing village, tourism has made it a national icon of sea and shows.
As a great city, it offers visitors not only its wonderful coast but also city tours to show them excellent architectural works, great theater and music shows and amusement centers suitable for adults and children.
The coast relief with its cliffs, dunes and gullies is special for riding a horse or driving a four-wheel drive vehicle. People fond of hang gliding and those who want to fly for the first time are drawn to this city. Mar del Plata´s port and coast are so extensive that have the necessary infrastructure to go for a sail, or do windsurf, jet ski or diving underwater.
Among the most famous beaches of Mar del Plata are: Popular, Bristol, de los Pescadores and Las Toscas to Torreón del Monje. In the city, you can visit several squares, fairs such as the Artisans Fair and the Museo del Mar (Sea Museum).
But Mar del Plata does not sleep: it is at night when amusement becomes stronger; there are a lot of casinos, pubs, bars, bingo halls and theaters. The best drama, humor and variety revues perform there during the tourist season.
Another worthy of admiration sight is the Fishing Port. At sunset, one can see a lot of ¨yellow fishing boats¨ arriving at the port. This is the main fishing port in the country. Driving along the breakwater, you reach the Seal´s Reserve, a continental colony. Close to the port is the Mar del Plata Yatch Club
From Mar del Plata, you can visit Laguna and Sierra de los Padres or Chapadmalal Seaside Resort. Northwards you find the Camet National Park where you can do conventional and unconventional sports.

Mar del Plata es hoy el centro balneario por excelencia de la Argentina, sin embargo, originariamente la historia de este lugar comienza a escribirse con asentamientos de indios pampas, luego es el saladero brasileño-portugués lo que le da impulso a mediados del siglo XIX y a fines de siglo con la llegada del ferrocarril comienza a vislumbrarse su perfil de villa turística.
El primer español que tuvo contacto con las costas marplatenses fue Fernando de Magallanes, que en febrero de 1519 bautizó Punta de Arena Gordas a la actual Punta Mogotes. Por su parte Juan de Garay realizó la primera entrada por tierra entre 1581 y 1582; pero ninguna de estas dos expediciones dejó una población permanente. En 1747 se establece una misión jesuítica a orillas de la Laguna "Las Cabrillas" (hoy conocida como Laguna de los Padres), dicho establecimiento recibió el nombre de Nuestra Señora del Pilar y su población alcanzó el número de 1200 indígenas viviendo en sus alrededores. La existencia de la misión fue efímera debido a la hostilidad de las tribus.
En 1857, un consorcio brasileño-portugués adquiere tierras en esta región e instala un saladero. Dicho establecimiento provocará un lento y progresivo cambio en la fisonomía de la región, ya que alrededor del mismo se concentrará un pequeño núcleo de población. Una vez en decadencia la actividad saladeril, adquiere esas tierras Patricio Peralta Ramos quien inicia las gestione para que se reconozca la existencia de un pueblo llamado "Puerto de la Laguna de los Padres" en terrenos de su propiedad .
Un acontecimiento que influirá positivamente en el desarrollo del pueblo de Mar del Plata será la llegada en 1877 de Pedro Luro, quien se hará cargo del saladero, la grasería, instalará un molino y construirá un nuevo muelle; lo que dará un decisivo impulso a la agricultura.
Con la llegada del ferrocarril, el 26 de septiembre de 1886, Mar del Plata se fue transformando en un centro urbano moderno. Este mundo urbano en formación, atrajo una corriente de población que fue gestando una sociedad permanente que habitaba todo el año. Paralelamente, desde fines del siglo pasado y hasta los años ‘30, Mar del Plata también fue un balneario de élite, clase que impulsó el desarrollo de los servicios de alojamiento y las residencias de vacaciones.
La llegada del ferrocarril en 1886, además de marcar el inicio de las actividades veraniegas, marcará el comienzo de las inmigraciones de colectividades extranjeras, como la italiana y la española. Esta afluencia impulsa su declaración como ciudad en 1906. Su puerto se funda en 1923 y le da el último empujón a su desarrollo económico.
