This harbor is located at the mouth of Deseado River, where this river pours its water into the Atlantic Ocean. There are a lot of nature reserves to visit: some a few kilometers away and others more than two hundred kilometers from the harbor. Not very important distances if you are in Patagonia.
One of this reserves is Río Deseado Reserve that gives home to cormorants, Magellan penguins, macaes, petrels, flamingos, swans, seagulls, skúas, oystercatchers, plovers, doves, herons, dolphins and wolves.
Wild Life Shelter gives home to seals with two kinds of fur. Also interesting to visit are: Cañadón El Duraznillo, Punta Medanosa (Punta Buque), Nature Reserve Bahía Laura and Scientific Reserve Monte Loayza that encloses the largest seal colony in the Province.
Provincial Reserve Isla Pingüino is also in Puerto Deseado. It is located 11 nautical miles from the harbor, close to Bahía Oso Marino and ajacent islets. It is the home of skúas, oystercatchers, ducks, cormorants and other sea birds. The island, which is very difficult to reach, has a colony of yellow-crested penguins
The Natural Monument Bosques Petrificados de Jaramillo (Petrified Forests) is located 256 km from Puerto Deseado and 200 from Puerto San Julián. This is the greatest deposit of fossils in the Argentine Republic and is called forests because the petrified trees lie on the same place where they lived. They were conifer forests and some of them are 25 m long. There are also pines with the same structure as the present ones. |

Fue en 1.520 cuando Hernando de Magallanes en su viaje de circunvalación, entra en la ría a reparar una de sus naves y la denomina Bahía de los Trabajos. En Diciembre de 1.586 Thomas Cavendish ingresa en la ría en su viaje hacia el Estrecho y bautiza al lugar como Dessire nombre de su nave capitana.
Puerto Deseado comienza a plasmarse como asentamiento humano permanente con el arribo a sus costas del Capitán Antonio Oneto en 1884 al frente de un grupo de colonos. La traza de la ciudad quedó definida recién en 1905.
La templanza y el espíritu de lucha del hombre patagónico permitieron que cuatro años más tarde comenzará la construcción del ferrocarril que pretendía unir la costa norte de Santa Cruz con Nahuel Huapi, pero se extendió en forma efectiva solo hasta Colonia Las Heras. El ferrocarril, hasta su cierre en 1978, fue un verdadero factor de progreso para Puerto Deseado y su zona de influencia
