In Puerto Santa Cruz you can become a member of an expedition. Visits to the Carlos Borgialli Museum, rides and travelling in boats across the estuary as the members of ancient expeditions did, will take you to the times in which mariners used to visit the region. From here, you can visit Isla Pavón, Comandante Luis Piedrabuena Town and National Park Monte León.
You will be able to visit “ Cañadón Misioneros” and to sail across the Santa Cruz River estuary.
Isla Pavón is 36 km from Puerto Santa Cruz. In this place, Cmte. Luis Piedrabuena hoisted the Argentine Flag for the first time. There is a tourist resort there, where you will be able to visit the museum, a replica of Cmte. Luis Piedrabuena´s house and to watch different kinds of birds.
Monte León National Park is located 75 km from Puerto Santa Cruz. With the low tide you can reach La Olla, a huge natural cave dug by the waves. From here, you can reach the Mirador from where you will be able to see the whole Isla Monte León. There, colonies of cormorants and seals are waiting for you. From there you can reach the Pingüinera Punta Entrada home of more than 20,000 Magellan penguins. |

El 13 de marzo de 1520 Juan Serrano, integrante de la expedición de Magallanes al mando de la carabela Santiago, llega a un amplio estuario y lo denomina "Ría de la Santa Cruz". El 26 de agosto del mismo año arriba el propio Magallanes y pernocta en la margen sur antes de emprender el cruce del estrecho. Se detienen allí, por el término de dos meses para proveerse de agua, leña, carne y pescado. Cuenta la historia que, antes de partir "quiso el capitán general que todos confesasen y comulgasen como buenos cristianos", para lo cual hizo erigir un altar en Punta Reparo.
En 1862 se instalan dos misioneros por el lapso de un año, los reverendos Schmiidt y Hanziber, de la misión anglicana "South American Misionary", en el valle del río que después sería denominado de "Los misioneros". Sus prédicas para convertir y educar a los tehuelches no tuvieron éxito. Los reverendos se retiran a las Malvinas al año siguiente.
En 1867, J. Mac Dugall, Mrs. Peterson y J. Hamsen, al mando de J.H.Gardiner, remontan el río Santa Cruz, por disposición de Piedrabuena, quien dio los útiles, caballos, y provisiones para la excursión.
Al final de su recorrido descubren el más hermoso lago del territorio, que nueve años después bautizará F. P. Moreno.
En 1880 la propaganda oficial invitaba a instalarse en las zonas distantes del país y lograr prosperidad trabajando la tierra. Así se sugirió y fomentó la colonización del territorio de Santa Cruz. Por ley se adjudicaba a los colonos interesados una legua de tierra, 500 ovejas, tres yeguarizos, dos vacas, una casilla desarmable y útiles de labranza. Luego de cinco años continuos de laboreo, el colono adquiría la propiedad de la tierra, debiendo devolver al estado herramientas y hacienda.
