Purmamarca means ¨the people of the Virgin Land¨ in aymara language. It is a small village that dates from the 17th century, next to Cerro Siete Colores. It is only 65 km from San Salvador del Jujuy.
Its buildings are made of adobe and roofed with thistle braces covered with mud. Its design was made around the main church, Santa Rosa de Lima, that dates from 1648 and nowadays a National Monument.
Another important building is the City Hall, which is one of the ten original city halls that remain in this country and the smallest among them. At the square there is a craft fair all year round where you can purchase from clothes to musical instruments.
But the most stunning attraction is natural and is the Cerro de Siete Colores (Seven Colors Hill) which ows its name to the red, green, pink, yellow, white, grey and purple shades belonging to different minerals that make up this hill.
Along the bed of Purmamarca River you can do trekking, riding or mountain bike and this circuit is known as Paseo de los Colorados. It is 3 km long and begins in Purmamarca.
Cultural and religious tourism are the most important in the Argentine Northwest. Purmamarca celebrates the misa-chico, the worship to the deceased and to the Pachamama. There, you can also enjoy the native music played with
reed flute, drums, erque and sikus, feeling the essence of the altiplano.

El pueblo de Purmamarca nació antes de la llegada de los españoles. Era un asentamiento en el Camino de los Incas, sus pobladores cultivaban el maíz, puerta de entrada a la Puna. Su nombre, derivado del aimará, significa Pueblo de la Tierra Virgen. Fue declarado lugar histórico en 1975
El trazado de este poblado se realizó en torno a la iglesia principal de clásico estilo quebradeño y con pinturas cuzqueñas del siglo XVIII. Su cabildo es más reciente. Su construcción data del siglo XIX , quizás en honor a las celebraciones por la Revolución de Mayo. Funcionó como sede de la administración municipal, como destacamento policial y actualmente es sede de la Biblioteca Viltipoco.
El pueblo fue re-trazado a fines del siglo XIX, otorgándole un trazado urbano que hoy lo caracteriza. La densidad edificada actual es muy pequeña, pero a pesar de ello las calles tienen sus límites bien definidos porque las propiedades cercan su pará¬metro con tapias de adobe de casi dos metros de altura, encerrando dentro, además de la pequeña vivienda, corrales para animales y verdaderas huertas de verduras y frutales. Estos pobladores, salvo los pocos casos de quienes se dedican al comercio, tienen sus campos dedicados a la agricultura de verano en los alrededores del pueblo.
Al costado de la iglesia se encuentra el Algarrobo histórico, su edad se calcula en 1000 años. De tronco desmesurado y amplia copa, fue mudo testigo de una importante parte de la historia de Jujuy. Bajo su sombra el último cacique de los Purmamarcas libres acogió con un vaso de chicha al primer evangelizador castellano, los generales de los ejércitos patriotas soñaron con la libertad americana y descansaron las tropas de Belgrano
