Río Gallegos is the Capital City of Santa Cruz Province and is located on the bay into which the river with the same name flows. From the tourist viewpoint, it is visited by everyone visiting Patagonia, by National Route 3. There you will find historical buildings such as ¨Nuestra Señora de Luján¨ Cathedral, the Colón Theatre, the Presidential Palace, o Roca´s Balcony, etc. Vírgenes Cape can also be visited from here.
Rio Gallegos International Airport is the entrance to southern Patagonia.
From this place we can visit Vírgenes Cape, 134 km away. It is the first European settlement which dates from 1584 and which goal was to warrant the strategic control of the Strait of Magellan. Nowadays, it is a nature reserve that encloses 1200 há and that is the home of the second most important Magellan penguins in Patagonia. |

| El 19 de diciembre de 1885, queda instalada la Sub-Prefectura de Río Gallegos e Islas Malvinas, con la llegada de los buques Villarino y Muratore. Asiste a tan importante acontecimiento el Gobernador del Territorio, Teniente José María Moyano, quien residía en Puerto Sta. Cruz. Cuando el territorio se convierte en provincia y al carecer Rio Gallegos de acta de fundación, uno de los primeros legisladores, el diputado Marcelino Alvarez propone que el 19 de diciembre de 1885 sea considerado el Día de Fundación de la ciudad |
