One of the most important industrial cities in the Argentine Republic and the most renowned tourist center in Santa Fe Province. Situated on the edge of majestic Paraná River, it is crossed by two streams. Historical monuments, exquisite architecture, parks, shores and islands, fairs and a great cultural and entertainment offer characterize this city. Rosario is the birthplace of many of the greatest argentine artists.
It is well-known for its basketwork.
Besides approach roads, Rosario has a famous Airport only 13 km from downtown with an important frequency of flights.
Recreational green spaces are profusely scattered about this city. Among them are: Parque de las Colectividades, Parque de la Independencia (site of Newell´s Old Boys Field), Parque España and Parque Urquiza.
But the most renowned of green spaces is Parque Nacional a la Bandera, situated on the Paraná bank where we also find the monument tribute to the act of swearing allegiance to the Argentine Flag and many Lola Mora´s sculptures. There are also open air fairs and markets scattered about Rosario. You can also visit Rosario Central Field.
During the summer, you can enjoy the coast and island beaches. Some are public and others are private. In La Florida Resort you can ride bicycles, horses do canoeing.
Another main attraction is the architecture. In Rosario you can find the English style in Fisherton Neighborhood and in the Commodities Exchange Building. Rosario-Victoria Bridge, Utopias Font and the Old Customs, together with Villa Hortensia, a 19th century palace are actual achitectural jewels.
Regarding entertainment, Rosario nights are one of the most cheerful of the Argentine Republic. There are lots of bars, pubs, discotheques and beer bars such as the traditional Wembley and Sunderland. For children, Rosario has The Children´s Farm, The Island of Inventions and The Children´s Garden, all with a ludic-educational purpose.
From Rosario, you can visit San Lorenzo, only 20 km away. Here, San Martín Grenadiers Army fought its first battle. Campo de la Gloria and the ruins of the convent have witnessed this heroic deed, an example of military strategy. During your visit, you will be able to watch by yourself the development of the events and the museum, which has 17 exposition halls.

El primer poblador de la zona de rosario, hacia 1689, fue el capitán Luis Romero de Pineda, quien recibió del rey una estancia en esa comarca. A principios de 1812, cuando todavía era una aldea, llegó el General Belgrano para establecer una batería costera y allí enarboló por primera vez la Bandera Argentina.
Durante la primera mitad del siglo XIX, Rosario fue el teatro bélico entre porteños, orientales y santafesinos. Artigas la ocupó tres veces, los porteños la incendiaron en 1819 contra Estanislao López, el caudillo santafesino, y la saquearon contra Ramírez. En 1829 sufrió el cañoneo naval de los unitarios, Rosas la ocupó y dejó una guarnición de 1000 hombres y en 1840 fue duramente cañoneada por una escuadra francesa que transportaba tropas unitarias.
Se estabilizó recién con la Confederación Argentina ya que fue elegida como puerto para las provincias del interior. En 1859 una escuadra porteña la cañoneó nuevamente y en 1861, después de la derrota de Urquiza en Pavón, las tropas porteñas volvieron a ocuparla.
En 1863 el presidente Mitre inauguró los trabajos del ferrocarril. Sin embargo, tanto Mitre como Sarmiento se oponían a que Rosario fuera la capital del país, tal como votó en tres distintas ocasiones el Congreso Nacional. En 1902, el presidente roca inauguró la construcción de un puerto, pero la supremacía de Rosario llega de la mano del ferrocarril. |
