It is a mountain village over 100 years old settled on a region that belonged to the Mapuche Curruhuinca community. Its special architecture matches the natural environment as stones and logs were used to build the houses. Here we find a modern ski resort: Chapelco. It is close to Junín de Los Andes, a town devoted to cattle raising and agriculture and the trout capital.
It was settled at the bank of Lago Lácar, westwards Neuquen Province and has the administrative division of Lanín National Park. It is the starting point for tourists to travel along the Seven Lakes Route, that links San Martín de Los Andes with Villa La Angostura. San Martín de Los Andes may be reached by land (Route 234) or by air since it has a local airport.
The natural pine forests on the slopes of the mountains and the lakes, falls, streams and the fast-flowing rivers make up an incredible landscape.
Sports such as fishing, hunting, water sports, rides, trekking, mountain bike, hikking and lacustrine trips may be done here. The most visited rivers are Caleufú, Hermoso, Collón Curá, Meliquina, Aluminé and Quilquihué.
In winter, the main attraction is Chapelco Ski Resort. In Mapuche language ¨Chapelco¨ means ¨waters from the Chapel¨. It encompasses 120 ha of skiing surface and 20 ski runs where you can do alpin skiing, nordic skiing, ski mountaineering and snowboard.
There are many gastronomic options such as deer, wild boar, trout, fruits, chocolate or jam or visiting the traditional tea rooms.
In the surrounding area there are some places worthy of visiting : Villa Quila Quina, Lago Lolog, Termas de Epulafquen, Playa Catritre, Reserva Centenario and Hua Hum. |

En esta zona habitaban los grupos aborígenes Puelches que se mezclaron con los Pehuenches, Huiliches y Araucanos venidos de Chile. En el año 1898 llegó al valle del Lácar la "División de los Andes", comandada por el General Rudecindo Roca. El primer encuentro entre éste y el cacique pehuenche Curruhuinca se realizó en el antiguo mirador del Valle del arroyo Pocahullo. A partir del acuerdo entre las partes, se decidió la fundación del pueblo de San Martín de los Andes.
En sus comienzos, la economía de San Martín de los Andes se basó en la explotación forestal, la agricultura y la ganadería. El comercio con Chile se vio impulsado por las escasas y deterioradas vías de comunicación que existían en ese momento con otras ciudades argentinas: era más accesible y rápido comunicarse con el país vecino por vía lacustre
En 1937 se fundó el Parque Nacional Lanín y se restringió la tala de especies arbóreas y fueron desapareciendo paulatinamente los poblados lindantes con la costa del lago. La actividad turística se vio favorecida por la incorporación de lanchas en el lago y la creación de las primeras pistas de esquí en el Cerro Chapelco.
