Sierra de Las Quijadas National Park is located northwest San Luis Province, 120 km from the Capital City. The main way of reaching it is National Route 147 from Hualtarán. This paved route links San Luis City with San Juan City. From Hualtarán, where the national park ranger´s house is located, you must drive 6 km along a well kept track up to Potrero de la Aguada. Another way to reach it is by National Route 20. In Chañarienta, there is a joint towards the south with National Route 147. This National Park encloses about 150.000 hectares of which 60% belongs to Sierra de las Quijadas National Reserve. This region was formed 5 or 6 millions years ago. It shows an impressive landscape of stratified walls of several shades of red in rocky outcrops, cliffs and terraces carved by wind and water during centuries. It was zoned National Park in 1991 and encloses not only vegetation but also archaeological deposits of Huarpe culture and valuable paleontological deposits. The highest mountains are Cerro El Portillo (1.200 m above sea level) and Cerro El Mogote (1.100 m). There is a free camping area, a grocery store, barbecues, tables , the shade of native trees and drinkable water (not running water). This National Park has National Rangers and tourist guides all year round.
