Talampaya is a cultural, paleontological and geological reserve that along with Ischigualasto Reserve in San Juan, has been zoned Human Heritage by UNESCO.
In the latter, we find the well-known Valle de La Luna (Valley of the Moon). It is a valley with reddish rocks where the wind and the water carved fanciful shapes and high walls. It shows strata up to 180 m high and the most popular shapes are : El Monje (The Monk), El Rey Mago (The Wise Man), La Torre (The Tower), El Cañón (The Cannon). As a cultural reserve, we find antropomorphic, zoomorphic and abstract engravings. There are also lots of fossils from the Triassic period, when dinosaurs began to appear. Here, the Lagosuchustalampayensis, one of the first dinosaur species on the Earth, was found. Another important find in the region are the fossil turtles such as Palaeocheris talampayensis, 210 million years old.
The different circuits to visit this reserve vary from one hour and half to the whole day. Vehicles specially adapted are use to travel here since circuits have not been marked in order to keep the natural environment.
