Tilcara is known as the archaeological capital of Jujuy Province. There, we find a very important archaeological depossit and the best known archaeological museum of the region. It is located 2.465 m above sea level, close to Río Grande and National Route 9, 84 km northwards San Salvador de Jujuy. Its colonial past is shown in its low adobe houses and in its steep streets. The main attractions here are Nuestra Señora del Rosario Church, built in 1797, surrounded by adobe walls and enclosing the painting of the Six Scenes of the Virgin, the Painting Museum, the Sculpture Museum and the Carnival Museum. A few kilometers from the center of Tilcara, you can visit a Pucará, a columbian fortress built on both hills.A nature attraction is the Garganta del Diablo (Devil´s Throat), a deep cut made by water on the stone. There are also adventure sports here. Some of them are: trips on four-wheel drive vehicles to Cerro Morado, trekking, mountain bike, rides and sandboard. As Tilcara celebrates customary festivals all year round, there is always a pretext to pay a visit to this place. During Holy Week the following festivals are celebrated: the Construction of Chapels and the Festivals of Tilcareño, Chicha, Comadre and Pachamama. |

.. Historia (subir) |
