The City of Trelew is an economic power in Chubut. Besides its great deal of cultural places, from there we can visit historical regions such as Gaiman, nature reserves such as Punta Tombo and Camarones or beautiful landscapes such as the place where Florentino Ameghino Dam was built.
This Patagonian city lies next to Chubut River, northwest Chubut Province 20 km from Rawson, the Capital City, and its well-known Playa Unión. It is the venue for Eistedvod, a Celtic yearly meeting of poets and muscicians that takes place only in Wales and in Chubut. Every second year, it is also the venue for the International Choir Contest.
Trelew is only 1.436 kms from Buenos Aires, linked by National Route 3 or a-1 h 50 m –flight. In this city, you can visit the Paleontological Museum Egidio Feruglio, that offers one of the most important displays of dynosaurs remains in South America. |

Nació en la segunda mitad del año 1886 como punta de rieles del ferrocarril que comenzaba a trazarse entre el Valle Inferior del Chubut y el Golfo Nuevo (actual Puerto Madryn). Su nombre en galés significa Pueblo de Luis en honor a Lewis Jones, propulsor de la obra y considerado desde entonces fundador de la ciudad.
El nacimiento de Trelew, se halla íntimamente ligado a la historia de la colonización galesa. El 28 de Julio de 1865, llega el barco ¨Mimosa¨ con 153 inmigrantes galeses a las costas del Golfo Nuevo (actual Pto. Madryn) y se establecen unos kilómetros más al sur, sobre la margen izquierda del Río Chubut, fundando las ciudades de Gaiman, Dolavon, Rawson -capital de la Provincia- y Trelew.
Dentro de lo que es hoy la ciudad de Trelew existían tres chacras de la Colonia Galesa pertenecientes a Lodwig Williams, Peter Jones y Jasiah Williams. En 1867, lograron resolver un grave escollo: el riego, trazando canales. Pero, además afrontaban serias dificultades en cuanto a la comercialización de los productos, en especial el trigo, que era de excelente calidad tal es así que fueron premiados en varias oportunidades. Nace así la idea de construir el ferrocarril, que uniría el valle con Bahía Nueva (hoy Pto. Madryn).
El 25 de mayo de 1889 se inaugura oficialmente el Ferrocarril Central Chubut, marcando el inicio de una nueva población, pues en torno a la estación surge un paraje donde se establecieron las primeras casa de comercio y las actividades complementarias como banco, correo, transportes, hotelería, talleres; funcionando como área de servicios de la actividad agropecuaria que se desarrolló en el valle.
