The Ischigualasto Natural Park, that in quechua means “site where the moon settles” is one of the most important geological, archaeological and paleontological reserves in the world. You can drive 40 km along the route, stopping every now and then to go for a short walk across beautiful places always accompanied by a guide. It takes three hours and a half if you do not want to miss anything.
For scientists, this park is an open book where it is possible to clearly read the changes that the place has been undergoing during several million years without having to excavate. Fossils of thousand-year-old flora and fauna along with geographical shapes resulting from wind and rain erosion make up this magnificent landscapes, the strangest of which is el Valle de La Luna (Valley of the Moon), a group of rounded hillocks without vegetation, made by the rain erosion on clayey and sandy rocks of different colors. In the 60´s, the place was named ¨Valle de La Luna¨ by Rogelio Díaz Costa, one of the first journalists captivated by the place.
In orden of appearance, some of the shapes we can find here are: the Worm, the Tracks, the Balcony of the Painted Valley, the Valley of the Moon, the Bowling Alley, the Sphinx, the Submarine, the Fungus and the Red Slopes.
