Administrative center, Villa Dolores is the most important city and commercial center in the Traslasierra Valley.
Villa Dolores is at the west of Córdoba Province, 525 meters above sea level; 189 km. from the capital city and 1,000 km of the Federal Capital.
You can access from Córdoba by the Altas Cumbres Road up to Mina Clavero and from there by Provincial Route 15.
It is located in the San Javier Department, bounding with San Alberto Department to the North, with the Calamuchita Department to the East and with San Luis Province to the South. San Javier Department is divided into five municipal districts: Dolores, Las Rosas, San Javier, Luyaba and Talas.
Villa Dolores is the administrative center of San Javier Department with a population of 30,000, enclosed in the district of Dolores and is home of more than half of the population in the region.
From West to East, a great part of the Department is surrounded by the summits of the Sierras Grandes, the Comechingones Hills and the Valley of the Conlara River that limits with San Luis Province.
The city keeps its traditional features, affording security and peace to its neighbors and visitors but it also offers a booming productive structure (at present, it encloses the only aerodrome in the valley).
The village developed with the settlement of the railway (1905) and the opening of the Camino de las Altas Cumbres (1916) that linked it to definitely Córdoba. Tourism has gained importance due to its natural beauties and the protection of the environment.
It is anually is venue of the International Poets Meeting. During the first fortnight of January, the National Festival of the Potato takes place.
San Pedro is also worth visiting as well as the Villa Dolores Church. The Municipal Resort is 330 m. from the square will let you enjoy the river. A few kilometers away we find La Viña Dam. |

La ciudad de Villa Dolores fue fundada en el pasaje Paso de León, el 21 de abril de 1853 por un decreto firmado por el gobernador de Córdoba, Alejo Carmen Guzmán.
El gobernador Guzmán cumplió, durante tres años (1852 – 1855), una gestión de Gobierno progresista y se dedicó a fundar villas y pueblos para abrir las puertas del progreso en la provincia de Córdoba. Unos pocos pobladores habitaban esta región, a ellos el Gobernador les comunicó la decisión de crear un pueblo allí. Esta actitud fue muy bien recibida y así un grupo de vecinos entre los que se encontraban Ignacio Castellano, Genaro Funes, Fernando Rearte, Justa Arias, Pedro Gutierrez, José Eustaquio Vidal y el clérigo Juan Vicente Brizuela comenzaron a realizar los trámites necesarios para emplazar allí una villa.
La capilla que allí construyeron, Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, dio el nombre a la localidad que, a partir del año 1905, acentuó su desarrollo gracias a la llegada del ferrocarril Buenos Aires al Pacífico que, en el año 1946 pasó a denominarse Ferrocarril San Martín.
La villa se desarrolló con la llegada del ferrocarril (1905) y la apertura del Camino de las Altas Cumbres (1916) que la vinculó definitvamente a Córdoba. El turismo ha adquirido en la zona gran importancia, aprovechando las bellezas naturales y la preservación del medio ambiente.
