This resort lies on the Atlantic coast. It gives evidence of a restless work done afforesting a desert region. Gesell encloses woods, as many of the region´s resorts do, but its trees are the oldest and its species the most diverse. Another feature is the assymetry and undulation of its streets, most of them still unpaved according to the tradition.
Its wide shore is ideal for doing sports and its quiet waters let you do water sports. Aero Club Villa Gesell and the Golf Club are worthy of being visited.
Visitors can rent vehicles to drive across the woods or along the shore. Sport fishermen can fish on the shore or while sailing. The city tour shows the creativity of sea dogs at the different cultural centers and museums. At night, bingo halls, pubs, bars and theaters are the options for everybody.
Another place worthy of being visited is Parque Reserva Pinar del Norte (Northern Pine Forest Reserve Park), where you will find a great variety of pines, cypresses, poplars, eucalyptuses, acacias, fruit trees (plum trees, pear trees, loquats, apple trees, fig trees, etc), casuarinas, elm trees, willows, ash trees, maple trees, holm oaks, olive trees, oleanders, tamarisks, oaks, cork oaks, brooms and giant sequoias.
Another place to visit is Faro Querandí, (Querandí Lighthouse), 30 km from Gesell. The only way to reach this place is along the shore, with four-wheel drive vehicles. You can also visit Reserva Dunas del Norte
(Northern Dune Reserve) where you can watch virgin dunes. This can be done riding a horse.
Other resorts to visit towards the South are Mar de las Pampas and Mar Azul. Both, which are experiencing a fast development, offer all the services to the tourist.

La zona era visitada por los indios querandíes antes de la llegada de los españoles. Pasaron muchos años de enfrentamientos entre los indígenas y los españoles primero y los criollos después hasta que finalmente la zona es conquistada por los expedicionarios.
Recién en 1931 Silvio Gesell compra 1.648 hectáreas con frente al mar a Eduardo Credaro, y en ese mismo año comienza a levantar la primera casa, esa fecha se considera como la fundación de la villa. Inmediatamente desarrolla un vivero para forestar la región.
El balneario que se levanta lleva el segundo nombre del Fundador Parque Idaho. A principios de 1940 arriban los primeros turistas y en 1944 Carlos Gesell nombra al balneario Villa Silvio Gesell en homenaje a su padre. Ese mismo año se construyeron los tres primeros hoteles.
Los turistas en masa comienzan a llegar con los servicios de transporte en la década del `50, fue la primer playa argentina en la cual se usó bikini y en los `70 fue el balneario con mayor crecimiento, en ese año fue declarada ciudad. Por Ley 9949, del 23 de mayo de 1983 Villa Gesell deja de ser Municipio Urbano y pasa a ser Partido.
