When the first Spaniards entered the present Córdoba territory from the north, they found this region that the Indians called Cavisacate.
Later these lands were granted as a favor to Suárez de Figueroa and Torres de Cabrera, and its development was due to the the great linking route: the Royal Road (Camino Real)
In this charming town a very traditional tourism is developed, since the farmhouses of old ranches and the big houses accomodate families who come especially from Buenos Aires, Cordoba and Tucuman to have a rest.
Since late 19th century, these houses have beeen housing Argentine politicians, artists and intellectual people.
Therefore, names such as Octavio Pinto, Arturo M. Bas, Pablo Neruda and Rafael Alberti -among others- can be mentioned as visitors of Totoral.
The Octavio Pinto Museum is opposite to the town´s main square and keeps some works and belongins of this great plastic artist born in Totoral (1890-1941). |

Los orígenes de Villa del Totoral datan de los asentamientos Comechingones y Sanavirones, pero luego la llegada de la conquista y la repartición de tierras fueron desapareciendo a estos pueblos originarios.
Esta zona de totoras fue denominada Cavisacat por lo indios cuando presenciaron la llegada de los primeros españoles. Antón Berrú, uno de los capitanes que acompañaban a Jerónimo Luis de Cabrera en su avanzada hacia el sur en busca del lugar indicado para fundar la Córdoba de la Nueva Andalucía, cayó de su caballo al tropezar este en la zona de las totoras. Los indios se sorprendieron por la resistencia del sujeto al salir ileso de semejante golpe y comenzaron a llamar al lugar “Cavisacat”, que en lengua aborigen significa: Pueblo de la caída y el golpe.
Estas tierras fueron entregadas en mercedes a Suárez de Figueroa y Torres Cabrera, y su desarrollo se consolidó con la gran vía de comunicación que fuera el Camino Real.
La iglesia propia surge por el año 1871 bajo la advocación de la Santísima Virgen del Rosario que actualmente, en octubre, tiene su fiesta propia.
