Yacanto de Calamuchita is a typical mountain town settled 1,150 meters high and 32 kilometers towards the west of Santa Rosa de Calamuchita, on a plateau that makes it look as a balcony, from which you can get excellent views of the valley. It is, in addition, the starting point of Los Linderos road, that ends at the foot of the hill with the same name and is one of the access roads to the “roof of Cordoba”, the Champaquí, a hill 2,886 meters high (according to the Air Force); it is the highest of this province. The extensive pine forests of its surroundings are a typical feature of Yacanto. This gives rise to one of the economic activities of the region: timber exploitation. Another feature are the complexes of cabins, most of them made of wood and with a mountain architectonic style, adapted to the surroundings, and destined to the receptive tourism. One of the main activities of the visitors is the adventure tourism, with rides, mountain bike, quadricycle, climbing and circuits of 4x4, most of which finish in climbing the Champaquí. Many groups of visitors arrive attracted by the numerous water courses of the region that offer the possibility of fishing trouts. In the town, an old chapel has enthroned the image of Nuestra Señora de la Merced. Trip ticket . Yacanto es un nombre de origen Comechingón. Esta Villa fue un antiguo puesto de la estancia Yacanto, de estirpe jesuítica que una vez dividida quedó Yacanto de Calamuchita y Yacanto de Traslasierra.
La estancia surgió como una merced que el Gobernador Pedro de Marcado de Peñalosa hizo al Gral. Manuel de Fonseca Contreras el 15 de octubre de 1598.A la muerte de Fonseca Contreras, su viuda Doña Leonor de Tejeda Mirabal funda en 1613 el Monasterio de Santa Catalina de Seña y entrega todos sus bienes para la nueva Fundación Religiosa.
Poco tiempo después , el 9 de noviembre de 1616, el Monasterio de Santa Catalina vende las tierras que tiene en las sierras, junto al pueblo de Calamuchita. Luego de pasar por varios dueños, estas dos mercedes fueron propiedad de la Compañía de Jesús, y formaban parte de la gran Estancia de San Ignacio de Los Ejercicios.
Después de la expulsión de las Misiones Jesuíticas, por orden del Rey Carlos III en 1767, Don Dalmacio Vélez ( padre de Dalmacio Vélez Sarsfield) realiza la mensura de esta extensa propiedad, que inició el 29 de noviembre de 1768, junto al Juez subdelegado Don Diego de Las Casas, quien también estuvo a cargo del inventario, según consta en el documento Compañía de Jesús , mensura e inventario de bienes de la Ea. San Ignacio . El casco de la Estancia , según cuenta Doña Layda Alvarez de Villagra ( única descendiente de la familia Villagra en la zona) , se constituía de una hilera de habitaciones con una galería en común hacia el poniente y sus paredes estaban pintadas de rosa. Siendo la principal actividad de la Estancia la cría de ganado bovino y ovino, se contrataba mano de obra , a los que se les fue pagando con parcelas de campos. Este fue el primer modo en que fueron surgiendo las divisiones de la tierra con el consiguiente asentamiento de familias y la formación del poblado.
