In 1582 the Town Hall resolves its construction with the rank of major church and under the dedication to Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia. In 1677 the building collapsed and its reconstruction was initiated the following year. Only by 1782 the new church is consecrated after numerous economic blunders and due to the absence of good workforce, what delayed the building almost a century.
It is majestic in its composition and location; it conjugates various stylistic expressions going from its neoclassic portal and some influences of the Indo-American art in its towers, up to a mixed air of Romanesque and Baroque in its dome. Its entry of iron with the silhouettes of San Pedro and San Pablo is very valuable. In the atrium, two funeral monuments, one with the remainders of Gregorio Funes and the other contains the embalmed bodies of General José María Paz and of his wife Margarita Weild. In the interior, there is the tomb of fray Mamerto Esquiu.
Entering you will be able to see its space organized in three ships, with a great dome in the cruiser. It surprises the lack of natural lighting, which gives the space fresh semidarkness.
In the left altar there is the famous silver tabernacle, which was made with the metal the cathedral possessed and with the metal met in all the parishes of the province.
In 1914 a group of plastic artists, with Emilio Caraffa as their leader, decorated the interior of the church giving it its current aspect.
With firm colors and being adjusted to the form of the vaults they created great compositions outstanding in the central vault "La Iglesia Triunfante " -The triumphant church- and "Los Evangelistas "-The Evangelists- in the pendentives of the dome, some Angels, cherubs and faces of saints complete the work.
To conclude the visit to the Cathedral we recommend you to travel through the short Passage Cuzco, which separates the religious power (Cathedral) from the politician (Town Hall) and finished behind the Cathedral in the small and intimate square Jerónimo Luis de Cabrera, with a monument to the founder of the city surrounded by aged trees.
