Architect E. De Estrada accomplished a very important project on March 17th 1940: the first civic center in the Argentine Republic. It was built with wood from cypresses and larches and with ¨toba¨ stone mined from Cerro Carbón. At the Town Hall, there is a very high tower with a clock on which, at 12.00 and 6.00 PM there appear 4 figures that represent the region. The first is an American Indian, Mapuche and Tehuelche, the symbol of the first inhabitant of this land. The second is a Jesuit, whose first mission was accomplished by Father Nicolás Mascardi. The third is a soldier who represents the Desert Campaign. The last is the farmer, representing the first inhabitants of this region arrived mostly from Central Europe. These people devoted to agriculture, cattle raising and
woodcraft. Other buildings making up the Civic Center are the Police Station, the Exhibition Hall (former Post Office), the former Customs Building, the local Tourism Office, the Museum and Sarmiento Library.
