Cerro Tronador is a dormant volcano situated at the boundary between Chile and Argentina, near the city of Bariloche. It splits two national parks: Vicente Pérez Rosales, in Llanquihue Province, Chile and Nahuel Huapi, in Río Negro Province, Argentina.
It is 3.491 meters high and has three tops: an Argentine one (Pico Argentino), 3.200 meters high, a Chilean one (Cumbre Chilena) 3.320 meters high and one just at the frontier of both countries, 3.491 meters high.
It is covered by seven glaciers. On the Argentine lap and from South to North are the glaciers Frías, Alerce, Castaño, Overo and Manso. On the Chilean lap, in the same direction, we find Peulla, Casa Pangue and Río Blanco.
The name of the hill may be due to the thunder-like noises made by the detachments and falls of floes.
