It is the first planned square of this city, thought to be created in 1794, when the new village was drawn. Its current name arose in 1881 with the name of the then president of the Republic.
As a square belonging to a fort, it was first a parade ground and a refuge of the neighbors during the indigenous invasions. Recently in the 20th century it acquires its social character as center of social meeting and artistic expression.
