Nahuel Huapi National Park was created in 1934 and is situated in the Argentine Provinces of Río Negro and Neuquen skirting the border with Chile. This Park encloses 750.000 Ha. of which 330.000 belong to the National Reserve. It started with the donation of land in Laguna Frías by Perito Moreno in 1903. There exist three types of vegetation within the Park: hydrophites, mesophytes and shrub-like steppe. At the heights, there exists a pedemontano forest made up by ¨cohiues¨, cypresses and ¨radals¨. There is also a montano forest with the predominance of ¨lengas¨. In the low areas there are ¨ñires¨ and ¨maitenes¨. The myrtles grow on the river banks and lake shores. In Quetrihué Península we find Los Arrayanes National Park. Another important natural reserve is the forest situated between Frías and Ortiz Basualto Lakes (westwards, near Puerto Blest).
