The Myrtles Forest (Cinnamon-barked Arrayan trees) is located to the south-east of the peninsula of Quetrihué (in Araucanian means "where there is myrtle"). It can be gained access to it by crossing a path in the forest that extends for 12 kilometers and begins in the entrance of the National Park Los Arrayanes in La Angostura Village a few meters away from the dock of Brava Bay.
This forest can be visited as part of a lake excursion, by bicycle, on foot with return in launch or, a round walking tour for the most daring ones. By bicycle, the excursion takes approximately 3 hours and the degree of difficulty is III (three). On foot it takes between 6 and 8 hours the round tour.
The first 800 meters the land is quite steep. Once past this first obstacle, the path itself narrows and we go inside the forest surrounded by coihue, ñire, radal, cypresses and notro trees. In about an hour of walk we will find the stream originating from Hua-Huan Lake. You can visit the lake in company of a guide, in some other opportunity, in order not to confuse the paths of departure or return to the main road.
After 9 kilometers of walk we come upon the old entrance to the Ranch Quetrihué property of Lynch family since 1931, whose lands were included in the National Park Nahuel Huapi in 1950. The peninsula of Quetrihué was constituted in the National Park Arrayanes in 1971 but the lands continue belonging to the family. You must follow the path outside of the old fences of said ranch.
Then we gained access to Pantagua Lake. There live diverse types of ducks like the biguá, vapor duck, coot, and birds that musically embellish the forest as the chucao, rayadito and woodpecker.
Following this path, we arrive at the forest of myrtles. In the entrance is the dependence of the park ranger, sheds and a minimarket with tables and preparation of quick meals. We can rest some minutes and start the tour through the forest following a hardwood and step road of 600 meters. This arrayan forest and the one of Victoria Island are the unique ones in the world that take arboreal forms reaching some specimens the 18 meters and 300 years old. The myrtle trunk is of cinnamon color and twisted, its bark is extremely cold and is easily removed. The natives made “chichi” (alcoholic beverage) and candy with its fruit, which is violet.
