National Park Los Glaciares extends on a surface of 724,000 hectares located in the southwest of Santa Cruz Province. It belongs to the Patagonian forest and steppe echo-regions of Altos Andes. This National Park was created to preserve an extensive area of glacial and continental ice, of the southern Andean-Patagonian forest, and samples of the Patagonian steppe.
Its fields of ice occupy an approximate total surface of 2,600 squared kilometers (more than one 30% of the surface of the park is occupied by ice). From these 47 greater glaciers descend. The best-known one of the glaciers is the Perito Moreno that extends on the water of the south branch of Lago Argentino with a front area of 5 kilometers and a height of 60 meters above the level of the lake.
Upsala Glacial, located on the north branch of the same lake, is the biggest It is 50 kilometers long and almost 10 kilometers wide. In the north sector of the Park is the Fitz Roy that outstands because of its height (3,375 meters) and because of its monumental aspect with the environment of the surrounding Andean mountains.
The slopes and low zones are covered with by forests of lengas and ñires. The driest of the environments of the park is the steppe. In it, vegetation is composed by plants adapted to conditions of scarce humidity and hardly winds. Thorny and small bushes, together with pastures of hard leaves, provide certain protection to the floor avoiding it from being eroded.
This protected area was created in 1937. In 1971, though Law N° 19,292 is established the current limits and the area of national park and national reserve.
Due to its spectacular beauty, to its glaciological and geomorphologic interest, and to the species of endangered fauna, the UNESCO declared this place as Place of World Patrimony of the Humanity in 1981.
