It is Buenos Aires´symbol and was built in May, 1936 to celebrate the fourth centenary of the first founding of the City. It stands in the place where the Argentine Flag was run up for the first time. . It is more than 67 meters high with a base of 49 square meters. It has only one entrance and four windows at the top, that can be reached climbing up a stair of 206 steps.
680 cubic meters of cement and 1.360 square meters of white stone from Córdoba were needed to build it. In 1938, after several stone detachments, that covering was replaced by polished cement. The work was done by architect Alberto Prebisch. It stands at the junction of two Avenues: 9 de Julio and Corrientes. Lines C and D of the Subway run beneath the monument.
