According to some versions, this is the place where Juan de Garay founded the city of Santísima Trinidad on June 11th ,1580. Since the very beginning it was considered Main Square and its boundary streets determined the plan on which the city was built. The fort, the old town hall and the cathedral were constructed around it. The Pirámide de Mayo, a monument built to commemorate the first anniversary of Revolución de Mayo, is at the center of the Square. In the past and at present, Plaza de Mayo is the center of political life in the country. In 1810 the ¨Revolution of May¨ took place, beginning the independence movement. In 1806 and 1807, the city was reconquered after the failure of the British fleets´attack. In this place, the Independence of the Argentine Republic was declarated on September 13th ,1816 and the National Constitution was sworn on October 21st , 1860.
In 1943, several thousand argentine people gathered here demanding the release of Tte.Coronel Juan Domingo Perón and in 1955, the Square was bombed by the air force during the coup attempt. Twenty-five years ago, Plaza de Mayo´s Mothers began to appear claiming for their children, missing since the military dictatorship and still do so. Plaza de Mayo is still the meeting place of every social demonstration.
