What today we know as the prison of Ushuaia was a jail that functioned in this locality between 1904 and 1947. The climatic conditions are raw in this region and we can say that it is location is remote geographically speaking. These circumstances made of Ushuaia the ideal place for a high security prison for dangerous common criminals and political prisoners.
Today it is a museum, but for a long time was the promoter of the regional economy. The population of Ushuaia grew around the prison.
