It coincides with the solar that was assigned at the moment of transferring the city to the current location, when was appointed Plaza Mayor; with all the religious, social, and civic meaning it had in the colonial epoch. In the 19th century it changes its sense and turns into a space of dissemination and social meeting mainly. The incorporation of trees and elements of ornamentation date from this epoch, the same as the two lateral fountains which are from 1876. The processing of the surrounding facades was object of different studies and regulations, destined to highlight the environment of the square. In 1916 was inaugurated the monument to General San Martin, work of Fontana and Serbelli, meanwhile the processing of vegetation was work of Carlos David. It is especially pleasant in spring, when taheebo trees flourish.
