The Monastery of Carmelitas Descalzas Santa Teresa de Jesus was founded in 1628 by Juan Tejeda, nephew grandson of Santa Teresa of Avila keeping the promise of erecting a House of Prayer next to his house in gratitude to the health recovery of one of his daughters. While the construction was carried out Tejeda got seriously sick, and because of this he ordered to close the house turning it into a convent. When he died, his wife got into religious life together with her two daughters who had already professed.
The church, of baroque lines with a magnificent lateral belfry and a series of niches on its facade was concluded in 1717, To its left, a great space is opened that precedes to the current entrance of the convent, that was reconstructed recently in a style that tries to recreate its colonial atmosphere.
To the right, the front of the convent, concluded in 1770, finishes in a kind of great crest with Portuguese reminiscences and is marked by pilasters that were absurdly selected to accomplish with a bylaw. Though it there is access to the Museum of Religious Art Juan of Tejeda, that was fit up in 1970 and possesses the most important collection of religious art in the country, belonging to the Archbishopric and Call Treasure of the Cathedral.
Among the pieces exhibited there are emphasized an sculpture of San Pedro in polychrome and articulated wood, a banner of the Emperor Carlos V embroidered in silver, coverings of altar, chasubles, relics of Santa Teresa, a crucifix painted with relics of San Ignacio of Loyola, custodies, cups and carpets.
The installations of the Museum keep testimonies of the life of closure of the religious and permit to enjoy a spectacular view of the dome of the Cathedral from the patio, in a microclimate that abstracts the visitor of the immediate urban hustle and bustle.
